Grace Lee Whitney: 1930 - 2015

The world has just lost another beloved Star Trek Original Series cast member with the passing of Grace Lee Whitney on Friday, May 1st at the age of 85.  According to The New York Times, her son Jonathan Dweck confirmed that she died peacefully at her home in Coarsegold, California due to natural causes.  Ms. Whitney is of course best known for her appearances as Yeoman Janice Rand in the first eight episodes of TOS; a role that she reprised in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) and additional feature films in the franchise, as well as an episode of Star Trek: Voyager in 1996 called "Flashback".   Her Hollywood career is a long and storied one, and began with a role in the 1947 film "Mystery Range"; while her television debut came in 1952 for the series "The Unexpected".  At a recent Las Vegas Star Trek Convention appearance, Grace Lee reminisced about being cast as a member of the all-woman band in the 1959 film "Some Like It Hot" and sharing a scene with Marilyn Monroe.   In his comments to the press, Dweck stated "Over time, she became appreciative of her short time on 'Star Trek' because she developed meaningful relationships with the fans, Leonard Nimoy and other cast members."  Whitney partially credited Nimoy with helping reboot her acting career in the late '70s after successfully overcoming a difficult period in which she struggled with alcoholism.

Below are some rare images of Grace Lee taken during the production of TOS ...

She will be remembered and beloved by fans around the world.   Rest In Peace, Grace Lee.

Star Trek Original Series Klingon D-7 Battlecruiser at the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle

Paul Allen, who co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates, is a well known collector of Star Trek and science fiction memorabilia.  His private asset management company, of which he is the founder and chairman, is called Vulcan, Inc.  Many of Mr. Allen's most celebrated TOS collectibles, including the original Captain's Chair used on the Bridge set of the Enterprise for all three seasons of production, are on display at the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame in Seattle, Washington.

Presented below are some detailed images of his TOS Klingon D-7 Battlecruiser filming miniature, which is currently on exhibit at the museum.   This miniature is one of two virtually identical "master tooling" models, each measuring 28" long by 20" wide by 7" in height, that were constructed under Matt Jefferies supervision by Gene Winfield's AMT-operated Speed & Custom Shop while The Original Series was still in production.  The designation "master tooling" model refers to the usage of these miniatures as templates for the creation of the molds used by AMT to fabricate their popular selling model kits of this battlecruiser.  The other miniature was gifted by Matt Jefferies to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in 1973; while this one passed through several private owners before becoming part of the Paul Allen Family Collection in 2006 via Profiles In History's Hollywood Auction 24.

Special thanks to Star Trek historian and archivist Fred Walder for his gracious permission to display the following original photos he shot of this beautiful model, which capture the delicate purple and green color scheme in outstanding detail and vibrancy ...

Moore (VFX Supervisor).   And just like the first auction, the Propworx Star Trek Auction V will include an impressive offering of starship filming miniatures, the likes of which have not been made available to the public since the historic Christie's 40th Anniversary event in October, 2006.  Included in the group of filming models to be offered, with a bid estimate of $25,000 - $35,000, is the huge 12 foot long Enterprise D Saucer Section miniature that was screen used in the seventh major feature film of the franchise, Star Trek: Generations (1994), for the memorable crash landing scene on the planet Veridian III.

Presented below are some detailed photos of a set of filming miniature model pieces that were used to create the third Nacelle and additional components on the refit U.S.S. Enterprise-D starship seen in the Star Trek: TNG series finale episode "All Good Things" (first airdate: May 23, 1994), which are now offered as Lot 1 in the upcoming May 30th, 2015 Propworx Star Trek Auction V on LiveAuctioneers.

The main item in this thirteen component set is the large third Nacelle section which measures approximately 21" x 10" x 4.5" in size and was centrally mounted atop the Secondary/Engineering Hull of the 6 foot Galaxy Class filming miniature.  It is made of resin that has been reinforced with fiberglass, features its original blue paint scheme with a sophisticated Aztec detailing pattern, and possesses an internal metal armature with attached halogen bulbs throughout to provide self illumination.   All pieces in this Lot remain in fine, screen used condition and come directly from the collection of Star Trek VFX Supervisor Gary Hutzel.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Jem Hadar Fighter Models In Propworx May 2015 Auction

Presented below are some detailed photos of a pair of Jem Hadar Fighter filming miniatures that were screen used as deep background ships in various episodes of Star Trek: DS9, and are now offered as Lots 6 and 7 in the upcoming May 30th, 2015 Propworx Star Trek Auction V on LiveAuctioneers.

These ships possess an insectoid-like appearance, consisting of a large main body with two thin warp nacelles at the sides.  Typically, this class of vessel would be seen on screen in formation with other smaller ships; and so the individual models would feature less elaborate construction details than are present on some of the larger starship filming miniatures.   Each Jem Hadar Fighter exhibits an iridescent purple paint scheme combined with red and gold highlights.  The two warp nacelles feature a green luminescent paint that glows when subjected to black / ultraviolet light.  Each model measures approx.  7" x 8" x 1" in size and has a hole drilled through the center of the ship from the top for mounting on a support rod during filming.   These fighters remain in excellent, screen used condition and come directly from the collection of Star Trek VFX Supervisor Gary Hutzel.

The following images of the Jem Hadar models in Star Trek Auction V as well as similar miniatures that were part of the Hutzel collection are shown courtesy of Propworx and Doug Drexler.

Presented below is the complete set of final prices realized for the 100 lots of Star Trek memorabilia that were offered in the Propworx Star Trek Auction V event; which concluded on Saturday May 30th in a live online bidding session at LiveAuctioneers.com.

Not entirely unexpected was the fact that the highest prices realized in this auction were associated with the group of Starship filming miniatures that were offered as the opening lots of the sale.   Specifically,  Lot 2 - the 12 foot Enterprise D Saucer section model from Star Trek: Generations realized a final price of $29,500 (including an 18% buyers premium); Lot 1 - the Enterprise D Third Nacelle Refit model from the TNG finale "All Good Things"  sold for $11,210 with premium; and Lot 4 - a Star Trek DS9 Klingon Battlecruiser went for $5,015 with premium.

The following values shown are the high bids witnessed on the items and do not include the 18% buyers premium ...

Julien's June 2015 Hollywood Legends Auction - Star Trek Results

Presented below is the complete set of final prices realized for the 7 lots of Star Trek memorabilia that were offered in the Julien's Hollywood Legends 2015 Auction; which concluded today in a live online bidding session at julienslive.com.

This sale is particularly notable for the presence of 4 extremely rare lots of TOS memorabilia:  Lot 547, which consisted of a massive archive of 193 total production script drafts and 94 story outlines; as well as Lots 548 through 550, which were authentic Original Series Spock, McCoy and Kirk Starfleet tunics.  This may be the first time since the incredible December, 1993 William Ware Theiss Estate Auction held by Butterfield & Butterfield  that a complete set of TOS tunics for "the big three" was available for purchase in a single sale.

Lot 547, the script archive, realized a final price of $70,400 (which equals a high bid or hammer price of $55,000 plus a 28% buyers premium) and is certainly one of the largest known Original Series production material archives sold at auction to date.  It compares in overall size to the Joan Pearce TOS Archive which consisted of 240 vintage scripts and numerous additional research reports, shooting schedules and story outlines, which sold as Lot 557 in Profiles Hollywood Auction 25 on July 28, 2006 for a final price of $63,250.

Lot 550 in this sale was a William Shatner screen used Captain Kirk tunic; which realized a final price of $57,600 (on a hammer of just $45,000) - a great price for a screen used TOS Shatner, especially considering that a different Shatner velour piece sold for $98,400 in Profiles Hollywood Auction 49 on July 31, 2012.  Today's tunic, Lot 550, was unique in that it was the first Original Series screen used costume that I've observed to contain a handwritten date, specifically, 11/11/1967, inscribed on its interior fabric.  That date is just a couple of days after the 2nd season episode "A Piece of The Action" completed filming on the TOS soundstage; and indeed, this specific costume can be seen worn by William Shatner in the opening scene of this episode, when Kirk is sitting in the Captains Chair on the Enterprise bridge.  The braid at the front cuff on Shatner's left arm is an exact screen match to Lot 550.

Lot 548, the Spock tunic, likely worn by Leonard Nimoy, sold for $42,240 (on a hammer of $33,000) and Lot 549, the McCoy short sleeved medical tunic, likely worn by DeForest Kelley, sold for $18,750 (on a hammer of $15,000).

Below are the hammer as well as final sales prices for all of the Star Trek memorabilia in this historic sale, in addition to the original Julien's catalog item descriptions ...

Presented below is the complete lot description, including the full set of auction catalog photos and a detailed inventory list, for the massive TOS Desilu production materials archive that recently sold for an impressive $70,400 as Lot 547 in Julien's June 2015 Hollywood Legends Auction.   This collection, consisting of approximately 173 total script drafts and 94 story outlines, represents one of the largest Original Series document archives ever sold at auction and is highlighted by the personal copies of production scripts originally distributed to key TOS personnel such as Bob Justman (producer), Joe Pevney (director), Joe D'Agosta (casting), Gene Coon (screenwriter) and Wah Chang (props).   A centerpiece of the collection is a Star Trek story outline/proposal written by none other than William Shatner himself; one of just two known surviving copies of this document - which was ultimately never developed into an episode.
